Advantage and disadvantage of Open Cast (O\C) mines.

 

A) Advantage of Open Cast (O\C) mines.

 Ø Opencast mines are safe as compare Underground mines.

Ø There is no problem for roof fails.

Ø There is no problem for ventilation, gas emission, explosion, inundation*.

Ø There is no need to arraignment artificial lighting during day.

Ø High rate of production can achieved as compare as U\G mines and easy to transport the excavated material.

Ø  Easy supervision is possible.

Ø High mechanized is possible.

Ø Full extraction is possible no mineral is blocked in shaft, pillar, barrier, support of main roadway etc.

 

Note: - Inundation means sudden inrush of water.

 

B)  Disadvantage of Open Cast (O\C) mines.

 

Ø Work affected by weather, climate most in Rainy season.

Ø To reach ore deposit large amount of overburden required to excavate and dump inside lease area of mines.

Ø There is environmental problem such as air pollution, dust and noise pollution during mining operation in o\c mines.

Ø There is chance of fly rock, ground vibration during blasting in o\c mine.

Ø After complete of mining operation and closing mine the land reclamation is necessary.

Ø After land reclamation also there may not possible of revival of original agriculture land.

Ø Long surface areas are lost to agriculture & other purpose.
